2017 Recap and 2018 Goals

2017—What a year! I think speaking for all humanity, this was one for the history books. But speaking for me, this year was the most enlightening year of my life. I had some very high highs and a few low lows. But at the end of the day, I can look back and say that 2017 has put me in line for 2018 to be the best year of my life. So, what did I do in 2017 that stands out? Let’s take a walk down memory lane.

1.       I started this blog! And what a world it has opened me up to. I haven’t treated this website as well as I should, but read on for my goals for 2018 to see how that will change.

2.       I went to Charleston with one of my best friends. Surprisingly, as an Atlanta native, this was my first trip to the city. I have to say, it didn’t disappoint.

3.       I spent 12 days in Ireland with the same friend. We road tripped around the whole country. It was our first international trip together and it was one for the record books.

4.       I downsized. I moved from my house into a much smaller place. This may not sound like a good thing to most, but for anyone who knows me, this is perfect. I am such a minimalist and I love living smaller. I was able to consolidate a lot of unnecessary things and it makes my life simpler. And compared to some NYC apartments, my place is still a mansion. This move is setting me up for some big long-term goals and I couldn’t be more excited.

5.       The love of my life and my littler adventurer was born. Ella Grace, my sweet baby niece, was brought into this world by my baby sister and (sometimes, when we get along) best friend. I myself am in no rush to have children (like ever) but I personally love kids. I mean, I run the infant nursery at my church. But I now know what it is like to look at someone and love them with all your heart (and she isn’t even my child). This little girl has brought more joy and smiles in her short 3 months, than I have ever known. Plus, my parents are finally grandparents, so yay the pressure is off me to settle down now!

6.       Amsterdam happened. My first time in the city. I have so many words for this place. I fell in love on day one. It almost gives London a run for its money for my favorite place to be. And I cannot wait to share about my experiences here.

7.       I overcame my anxiety in 2017. At the end of 2016, I had a rough go with my anxiety. My trip to Iceland ended in a terrible anxiety ridden day that led into the weeks following my return home. Then in May I went through an experience that pushed my anxiety over the edge. However, it also gave me the chance to learn to handle this issue. My anxiety reached the lowest point it has been, and I was able to make it out of it and learn how to cope. I manage it much better today than I did a year ago, and that is an accomplishment.

This list isn’t everything I accomplished in 2017, or everything I overcame. But it is the big things that are travel related. It was a year of learning and a year of growing. I have never been happier with where my life is currently, and I am even more excited to see what next year holds.

2018—I am not a fan of resolutions. But I am a fan of goals. You should always have goals that you are working towards, whether they are big or small. I don’t necessarily think they have to be set on January 1st but I do think they are important to set and revisit throughout the year. I will turn 30 next year, which is a big milestone. So, I have a lot of goals that I have set to be met by then. Thankfully that isn’t until November, so we have awhile! I also have a lot of long-term goals but none that will be accomplished in 2018, so I am not going to mention those (however, if any do happen in 2018 then go me!). I am going to stick to mostly “travel” related goals, because duh. So, what are my goals for 2018?

1.       Do something new once a month. Whether that is going to a new city for a weekend trip, or doing something near home. I want to find a new adventure at least 12 times next year.

2.       Grow this blog. I did not spend near enough time writing for the blog this year.  My last post was almost 2 (!!) months ago. I spent very little time on social media and in 2018, that is not going to be the case.  I have so many plans and post ready to go. I want to post at least once a week and grow my presence online. This blog is my #1 priority next year, and I hope by the end of the year, it shows.

3.       Start a YouTube channel, travel related of course. I actually vlogged my Amsterdam trip and will hopefully start with that video. But I also want to do so much more that vlogs. I want to do travel Q and A’s, sit down videos talking about travel related products, talking about working full-time and traveling, and even talk about traveling with anxiety. This is a big goal of mine and I hope I can step up and make it happen.

4.       This may sound strange, but I have a goal to not travel internationally in 2018. Wait, to NOT travel internationally? How is that a goal, just don’t book a trip? Because not booking flights is impossible for me. I am constantly searching for a good flight deal to Europe and not buying it when I find it will be a challenge. This goes towards a long-term goal of mine, and a short-term goal that is listed below.

5.       See more of our beautiful country. Specifically, I want to see NYC at Christmas and do a California road trip. Maybe even Seattle, Las Vegas, and a Texas road trip.

Do I hope to do more than the things listed? Yes, of course. But this list is merely travel related. I am hoping for big things in 2018, and the toughest lesson I learned in 2017 is, if you don’t work for it, you will never get it. So, look out 2018, because I plan on working harder than I have ever worked. And doing things bigger than I ever dreamed of doing.

So, tell me, what is something you accomplished in 2017 or a goal you have for 2018? Leave your comments below. And as always, follow me on social media to see when a new post is up. XOXO

  1. I know what you mean about trying not to travel! I have an expensive “new car” month coming up, and hubby and I hope to move house (we’re downsizing too!) and yet I’m still constantly searching SkyScanner and airline sites for deals! This is meant to be a year (mostly) of UK staycations! Congratulations on conquering and achieving lots in 2017, best wishes for 2018!!

  2. Goal setting is always an important thing this time of year! I love your idea of traveling domestically in 2018. There are SO many great things to see in the US.

  3. Great goals! And good for you for overcoming your anxiety. I had a rough year with anxiety in 2017 too which actually prompted me quit my job and start my blog! Keep it up!

  4. Great job downsizing! Good luck accomplishing your goals – properly maintaining a blog is hard work, but the videos are even tougher!

  5. Congrats, Laura! I myself have just recently started my own blog, so I can relate perfectly! I wish you all the best. Let me know how vlogging goes once you’ve started. 🙂

  6. Sounds like you have had an amazing 2017 and happy new year. Also congratulations on starting the blog it sounds like it is working out for you really well which is always great to hear. I will be interested to hear how vlogging goes as I have yet to try it.
